How to reach Rishikesh, Uttarakhand?

Traveling from Rishikesh or Haridwar to Joshimath involves a scenic but long journey through the Garhwal Himalayas, following the Alaknanda River via the famous Panch Prayags (five sacred river confluences).


Here are your best travel options:

By Road – Shared/Private Transport (Most Common)

Duration: 10–12 hours | Distance: ~275 km

Route: Rishikesh/Haridwar → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Nandaprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath


Transport Options:


Shared Jeep/Tempo Traveler

• Cost: ₹600–₹900 per seat

• Departs: Early morning (4:30–6:00 AM) from Rishikesh’s Natraj Chowk or Haridwar bus stand

• Booking: On-spot; no pre-booking needed

• Pros: Budget-friendly, quick departure

• Cons: Tight seating, not ideal for comfort


Private Taxi

• Cost: ₹6,000–₹8,500 (one-way, for 4–6 seater car)

• Best For: Groups or travelers preferring flexibility

• Can book via: Local taxi unions, travel desks, or apps like Savaari


State-run Buses (GMOU/UTC)

• Departs: 4:30–5:30 AM from Rishikesh Bus Stand (near Natraj Chowk)

• Cost: ₹500–₹600

• Booking: At bus stand or sometimes via UTC website

• Cons: Slower, fewer stops, less frequent in monsoon


Solo Travel Tips

• Leave before 6 AM to avoid landslide zones and reach before dark

• Keep buffer days during monsoon months (July–September)

• Avoid night travel in the hills

• Pack food/water, especially for long stretches without dhabas

Things to Carry

  • Trekking shoes : Carry water proof trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support. Do not carry sports shoes.
  • Three layers of warm clothes : Carry two or three-layer jackets, fleece jackets and a padded jacket.
  • Two/Three trek pants : Carry light cotton trek pants. Denim/jeans and shorts are not suitable for trekking.
  • Three t-shirts (collared/dri-fit) : Full sleeved t-shirts that prevent sun burns on the neck and arms. Carry one or two dri-fit t-shirts.
  • Thermals : Carry thermals (top and bottom).
  • Sunglasses : Sunglasses are mandatory. There will be lot of snow on the trek and can cause snow blindness.
  • Cap : At high altitude, the sun is extra harsh so carry a cap to protect yourself.
  • Water proof hand gloves : Carry water proof gloves and avoid woollen gloves as they will get wet if you touch snow.
  • Socks (3-4 pairs) and a pair of woollen socks : Apart from two sports socks, you can take a pair of woollen socks for the night.
  • Headlamp/LED torch : Mandatory
  • Raincoat/Ponchos : At high altitudes, snowfall and rain are quite common and it’s mandatory to carry a poncho so that you don’t get wet. The trek will continue as planned even during rainfall.
  • Lunch box and water bottle : Every participant should have their personal lunch box and a water bottle [insulated type].
  • Toiletries: Keep items like toilet paper, wipes, moisturiser and sunscreen.
  • First Aid Kit: Carry items like few basic medicines, few antiseptics and adhesives.

Itinerary

  1. The journey begins on Day 1 with a scenic drive from Haridwar or Rishikesh to Joshimath, covering approximately 275 km in 10 to 11 hours. The ride cost is 1000 INR per person via Tempo Traveller. The charges are not covered in the package and members need to pay themselves.
  2. The route follows the Alaknanda River and passes through the sacred confluences of Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag—collectively known as the Panch Prayag.
  3. Upon arrival in Joshimath, which serves as the gateway to several Himalayan treks including Valley of Flowers and Badrinath, participants will check into a hotel or guesthouse and enjoy a warm dinner.


Mandatory Documents

  1. ✔️ Medical Certificate should be signed by a registered MBBS doctor and should have the seal of the doctor.
  2. ✔️ Original and photocopy of Aadhar card required. In case of Foreign Nationals Passport and Visa would be required.
  3. ✔️ NOC form with participant signature (will be provided on arrival at base camp).
  4. ✔️ Passport sized photograph - 2 no.

Who can participate ?

Anyone who is above 12 years of age with a good physical strength and stamina can participate in the event. Participants should not have any medical issues like Hypertension, Asthma, Diabetes or breathing problems.

Participants should prepare themselves before participating in the trek such that they are able to jog/brisk walk 5 kms in 40 minutes. Participants with a BMI of 30 and above need to get it below 30 before joining the trek.


Preparation :

Strong physical fitness is a must for any Himalayan Treks. Whenever one is undertaking activities like High Altitude Trekking, make sure that you are preparing yourself for the trek in terms of Aerobic fitness, muscle strength and breathing rhythm.
