About

Bhaba Pass is one of the best crossover treks of Himachal Pradesh. The high-altitude mountain pass-crossings over the Bhaba and Pin valleys at 16,105 feet is an experience of a life time. From the highest point of the pass, you get to enjoy a panoramic 180° view of the Bhaba and Pin valleys. This fascinating trek features some of the most dramatic shifts in landscapes and cultures. The trail starts from the lush grasslands of Kinnaur and leads up to the desolate mountain ranges of Spiti valley. Pin Bhaba Pass is classified as a moderate-difficult trek. It is a strenuous hike up and down two starkly different mountain valleys. It requires high-levels of fitness, endurance and skill to accomplish this task.

How to reach Kafnu ?

By Bus/taxi: Take a bus headed towards Shimla from Delhi/Chandigarh. From Shimla take a morning cab for Kafnu (Charges are 6000 for a sumo). Reach Kafnu by 3 PM.

Things to carry ?

✔️Trekking shoes : Carry water proof trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support. Do not carry sports shoes.

✔️Three layers of warm clothes : Carry two or three-layer jackets, fleece jackets and a padded jacket.
✔️Two/Three trek pants : Carry light cotton trek pants. Denim/jeans and shorts are not suitable for trekking.
✔️Three t-shirts (collared/dri-fit) : Full sleeved t-shirts that prevent sun burns on the neck and arms. Carry one or two dri-fit t-shirts.
✔️Thermals : Carry thermals (top and bottom).
✔️Sunglasses : Sunglasses are mandatory. There will be lot of snow on the trek and can cause snow blindness.
✔️Cap : At high altitude, the sun is extra harsh so carry a cap to protect yourself.
✔️Water proof hand gloves : Carry water proof gloves and avoid woollen gloves as they will get wet if you touch snow.
✔️Socks (3-4 pairs) and a pair of woollen socks : Apart from two sports socks, you can take a pair of woollen socks for the night.
✔️Headlamp/LED torch : Mandatory
✔️Raincoat/Ponchos : At high altitudes, snowfall and rain are quite common and it’s mandatory to carry a poncho so that you don’t get wet. The trek will continue as planned even during rainfall.
✔️Lunch box and water bottle : Every participant should have their personal lunch box and a water bottle [insulated type].

Day 1 : Reporting at Kafnu base camp and Orientation.

All the participants will report at Kafnu base camp by 3 PM and will undergo registration process. Freshening up and snacks will happen at the base camp.
Post snacks orientation. Orientation will cover all the general instructions that could be helpful for the trek like backpacking, marching technique and medical awareness.
Overnight stay at Kafnu base camp.

Day 2 : Trek from Kafnu – Mulling (3,100m) (5-6 hrs).

After breakfast the trek starts through a village and forest area following the Wanger River. The route is heavily forested with pine, cedar and birch. After a few hours of steep climb the path gradually ascends to the campsite, a lush green meadow on the banks of the Bhaba River. Overnight at Mulling campsite.

After breakfast we start for the base of Bhaba Pass. The trek today involves many activities like river crossing, simple walks and a gradual ascent. The valley becomes more green and forested. Continue walking further to the open flat ground and camp there for overnight stay.Kara campsite offers some of the fantastic views of Kinnaur mountains.

Start the trek early to get an advantage in the stream crossing. River Wagner combined down from Bhaba is split into lot of tributaries making it easy to cross.
Climb up, on the true left of the river amidst meadows with beautiful alpine flowers. It takes around 2-3 hours from the river crossing to reach Bhaba base campsite. Overnight stay at Bhaba base.

Day 5 : Trek from Phustirang/Bhaba base (4,000m) - Bhabha Pass (4,850m) - Baldar (3,900m) (6-7hrs).

Today the first three hours is a steep climb to the top of the Bhaba Pass at an altitude of approximately 4,865mts. After reaching this height the trek continues to enter in Spiti Valley. The trek is a steep descent through the moraines and snow/ice patches. Overnight camp at Baldar camp.

Today is last day of trek, after Breakfast trek continues towards Mud. After 5 hours of trek we reach to the first Spiti village, Mud, having nearly forty families. Overnight stay in Mud.

After morning breakfast, participants will be taken to Kaza via Jeep ride. Departure will be given at Mud by 5 AM.

Is it appropriate for beginners ?

Bhaba Pass is a difficult level trek and is recommended for experienced trekkers. One should have. minimum of two Himalayan Trekking experiences to participate for it.

What is the duration ?

Bhaba Pass takes min of 7 days for just the trek. Keep a couple of days extra to explore Kaza and the nearabouts.

What is the best time to visit ?

There are two best seasons to do the Bhaba Pass trek.
First is between June to July.
Second is between August-October.

What is the maximum altitude ?

At 16,100 feet, this place is mostly ventured by shepherds and a handful of trekkers. With moderate climb followed by steep uphill trek accounts for the most incredible journey during the whole trek.

What is the average temperature ?

The average temperature in the daytime will be 12°C to 18°C and in night it could be 0°C to 4°C.
One must bring enough pair of clothes and best-quality trekking boots (Water proof) to cover the whole trek carefully and does not face any difficulties due to cold.

What level of fitness is required ?

Preparing yourself well before coming for and Himalayan trek is really important. Bhaba pass is easy-moderate trek and requires basic level of fitness.
Basic physical fitness you can achieve by routinely doing a 20-30 min cardio exercises like running, skipping, crunches, squats. Work on your calf muscles, knees and thighs.
Apart from basic physical fitness you need to be properly acclimatized before starting the trek so keep you body well hydrated and rest enough after reaching the base camp.

Is mobile network available ?

There is no mobile connectivity as soon as you start the the trek from Kafnu. One might get BSNL network at Kaza.
